Inspiring learning for a fairer future

#ChangeMakers plan their festival

Thursday, 12 March 2020 10:15

Our young #ChangeMakers groups from Fèis Rois, Nairn Academy, Inverness High & Inspire Highland came together in February to help plan the project's festival in at Eden Court in May

We recently brought our Start The Change Project's #ChangeMakers groups together to share ideas and begin to plan the project's festival, which will showcase the work they've been doing over the last two years, all of which is helping to bring about positive change in their communities.

Some of our Change Makers from across The Highlands

With a focus on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their connections to contemporary migration, the EU-wide Start The Change Project supports educators to develop their understanding, skills and practice so that the young people they work with feel empowered and encouraged to make a change within their local communities and the wider world.

Each 'Change Makers' group is unique and focuses on issues they feel are important to address within their own context and from their own perspectives. With 9 groups across The Highlands, they'll be coming together in May to celebrate their work and to tell the migration stories they've uncovered throughout the project, in the hopes of challenging the negative stereotypes and perspectives people may have; shining light on the humanity behind people's experiences.

Coming together to plan ahead

Our Global Learning Officer, Lindsay Dunbar, facilitated the session during which the groups got to know each other, collaborate and think ahead to how they could best share their experiences with the wider community in the public celebration over two days at Eden Court. It's set to include interactive displays, live performances and opportunities to join in with the positive change taking place in local communities.

Listening to migration stories

A major part of their work is to listen to, hear and share the stories of individuals who've migrated to Scotland for a wide range of reasons. Each group is gathering these stories to form part of the festival which will take place at Eden Court in Inverness, May 15th-16th. We'll have more details on that soon so check our news feed and social media for updates.

Sharing ideas for the festival

As ever, when we get the opportunity to work directly with young people, we're inspired and reenergised by the passion, empathy, understanding, knowledge and skills they bring with them. We've no doubt the festival will not only be a celebration of their work but of them as young people, truly Global Citizens and real Change Makers.
