Stand up for Farmers on Fairtrade Fortnight

Tuesday, 01 March 2016 15:24

Fairtrade fortnight has begun and this year it shines a light on food security issues facing farmers and workers globally. The theme is "sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers!"

As Martyn Luther King once famously said, "Before you've finished eating breakfast you have depended on half the world."

Despite our dependence on small-scale farmers and workers for the food, drinks and products we consume on a daily basis , half the world's hungry- nearly 400 million people, are estimated to live on small farms.

If farmers are paid a fair price then they are in a better position to provide enough food for their families all year round.

Over fairtrade fortnight, people are being encouraged to sit down to a Fairtrade breakfast and stand up for a fair deal for farmers.

Fairtrade is an excellent topic through which Global Citizenship/Learning for Sustainability themes such as human rights, social justice and sustainable development can be explored.
