Learning for Sustainability Festival on 9 September

We at Highland One World are looking forward to being involved in the upcoming Highland Council Learning for Sustainability Festival. The event, with a theme of Scotland's history, heritage and culture, will take place at Millburn Academy, Inverness on Saturday 9 September. All early years practitioners, primary and secondary teachers are welcome.

Spring at Highland One World

Its been a busy term for Highland One World. We’ve seen nearly 130 Highland Council Probationers for the second part of their global citizenship training, we’ve been back out to the Western Isles to support teachers there, we’ve delivered training on how global citizenship education can be effectively combined with outdoor learning, supported teachers to explore the current refugee crisis with learners, piloted our very first online course, worked on improvements to our network’s GCE resource website ‘Signposts’ and lots more besides!

New edition of Stride magazine out now!

Our network's online magazine, Stride, has a new edition out now.

We are delighted to announce the return of writer, activist and provocateur Colm Regan to Inverness on Saturday 21st January 2017 at Millburn Academy, Inverness. This time, he is accompanied by Tony Daly the Co-ordinator for Irish charity '80:20: Educating and Acting for a Better World'. This event will comprise a talk from Colm followed by workshops specific to primary of secondary teachers.

 

Developing global citizenship through film

At the end of October, Highland One World delivered a CPD for primary teachers at Eden Court on using short films within global citizenship education. HOW worked in partnership with Take One Action, the UK's leading social justice film festival, on the training session.   Teachers shared ideas and developed skills in using short films to explore issues such as borders, bullying and diversity with learners.

Celebrating Our Food, Our World, Our Future

On Saturday 10 September more than 80 teachers and education partners from across Highland got together in Inverness High School to celebrate food as a context for Learning for Sustainability.  It was a day of great inspiration, networking, learning and discussion as well as fantastic food!

On September 10th from 10am to 2pm, we will be hosting a Learning for Sustainability festival with a celebration of food as a rich context for learning. This is a great opportunity to build your skills and confidence in Learning for Sustainability and to meet organisations in the marketplace who can support you in this area.

Just before the summer holidays, we were very lucky to welcome more visitors from Malawi - a group of doctors and nurses from Ekwendeni Hospital in northern Malawi.

The Rice Connection - Kilombero Farmer Visit

When speaking of development, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie once said of Africa that it was not a place where 'people need limp gifts of fish, but sturdy fishing rods and fair access to the pond.' Communities need to be able to develop sustainable livelihoods and have fair access to what it at present a very unfair global trading system. Just Trading Scotland is doing just that by buying rice from Kilombero rice farmers in Malawi at a fair price.

Developing global citizenship in the Western Isles

Rachel Avery from Highland One World spent a week in February delivering training on global citizenship education to teachers and probationers across the Western Isles. CLPL sessions were held on the Isles of Lewis, Harris and Benbecula, and teaching staff from 16 of the 27 schools on the islands participated.

Conference: Global Citizenship Matters in the Highlands

On Saturday 31st of January, eighty teachers from across Highland braved the elements to attend our Global Citizenship Matters conference at the University of the Highlands and Islands' new Campus in Inverness. The aim of the conference was to build teacher skills and confidence in Global Citizenship/Learning for Sustainability (LfS) and to build a thriving network of LfS practitioners across Highland.
