Highland One World

Global Learning Centre

Inspiring learning for a fairer future

Our Team

Catriona Willis

Coordinator

Geographer, educator, environmentalist and activist. I have a long standing interest in sustainability and social justice, and the transformative power of education. After graduating with a degree in Environmental Geography, I spent over 10 years in India and Taiwan working in the international development and education sectors before returning to the UK to complete a Masters in Environment and International Development, going on to join Highland One World in 2012.

I believe that education is fundamental to the creation of a more just, sustainable and peaceful world.

Rachel Avery

Education Officer

My interest in Learning for Sustainability and global citizenship has been life long - from volunteering in my local woodland wildlife reserve age 13 to starting an Amnesty International club in my school. I've worked supporting children and young people to explore the world around them for over 25 years, in both formal and nonformal education settings in Scotland
and overseas.

I used to work as a freelance facilitator, and love working with teachers since I started at HOW in 2015. Developing and delivering interactive and thought-provoking training courses is one of my favourite things!

Ben Sparham

Education Officer

Teacher, educator, father, outdoor enthusiast and occasional activist. Combining my dual careers of Geography Teacher in Inverness and Education Officer for HOW allows me to pursue my lifelong passion for providing an active, real and global education for young people.

I live in Boat of Garten with my wife and two sons and am grateful to have the Cairngorm Mountains as a neighbour.

Julie Rutter

Administration and Finance Officer

After being brought up on a smallholding and training in Ecology I worked in Forestry with a particular emphasis on access to the outdoors for recreation and education. Leaving Forestry, I ran a small business producing naturally dyed yarn with wool from local farms. I’m delighted to now be with Highland One World whose work helps deliver education in line with many of my core beliefs. I love living in the Highlands and have been privileged to be able to bring up my family in these special surroundings
