Art for Action

We support upper primary and secondary pupils to learn, think and get creative on climate issues that matter to them by creating artworks to share their views.

There is an urgent need for collective action on our climate, at all scales.   It’s important that children and young people are supported to raise their voices and to ensure decision-makers, both locally and globally, listen to their concerns about the climate crisis.

Art + Activism = Artivism

The project in 2024/5

Climate action-related artworks produced by over 600 children and young people from 17 Highland schools were displayed in the Highland Council Chambers during the fortnight of COP29 in November 2024, and then in a public exhibition at the Inverness Botanic Gardens in March 2025.   With support from the Open University, we hosted a high profile event at the exhibition where MPs, MSPs, councillors and local business leaders had the opportunity to see the artwork and hear from some of the young artists.

Resources and information: Our Art for Action Teacher Guide was written in advance of COP29 in Baku, but still has lots of relevant content including:

  • Background information and resources on climate justice
  • Resources and activities for supporting artivism in the classroom

The project in 2025/6

We’re currently working on an anytime learning resource for teachers on creative activism on social justice and environmental issues, and an online gallery of inspiring artwork created by children and young people as part of this project.  We will be hosting another Art for Action exhibition at the Highland Council Chambers in November 2025 for COP30.  For more information or to get involved, contact info@highlandoneworld.org.uk.

We’re extremely grateful to the Pebble Trust for their support for this project.
